Open Rooms

Provide instruction (with the aid of a lead mentor) to a classroom of refugees 1-2 times a week. Classes often revolve around language acquisition, literacy, or academic subject support. The material will not be hard and everything you need to know can be looked up on the spot. The main goal of mentors is to be a helpful and friendly face for people who are new to the United States and struggling. You should be confident in your ability to be one of the first connections these refugees have in America. The working hours are more flexible than One on Ones.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend the virtual meetings that occur Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30-8:30 PM CT
  • Work and observe the lead mentor of the class as they teach
  • Once you have observed 3 lessons, you are then eligible to become a lead mentor
  • Track progress and share brief updates with the program coordinator
  • Log any and all hours volunteered on POINTAPP software
  • Maintain patience and cultural sensitivity given language barriers and trauma histories
  • Communicate promptly if you are unable to attend a lesson
